Supply List

I want you to have a great experience in the workshop, and one way to do that is to use the art supplies and mediums you feel most comfortable using. Since this class is a bit different from my "step-by-step" classes, using the mediums you have on hand will give you the freedom to explore and experiment.

With that said, there are a few suggested items that you might want to think about purchasing for the workshop.

If you're interested in working large, buy the drawing paper roll. However, if you're not interested in using the roll, purchase the Strathmore 18X24 pad of drawing paper; the sheets are still large enough to work on and get interesting marks and lines.

Strathmore Drawing Paper (Roll)

Strathmore Drawing Paper (18 x 24) Pad

Wood Panel (optional) - I will use this in Module 2 for the final collage piece. But, you can use anything you have on hand to make the collage.

Watercolor paper or mixed media paper of your choice. There are a lot of exercises that will use watercolor paper, so make sure you have enough. Feel free to use hot or cold press, whichever is your favorite. I feel strongly about getting the best paper you can for the best results.

Journal for notes

Any Sketchbook or Art Journal for experimenting, sketching, painting, and notes. I like to have a small sketchbook that I always keep with me and a larger one that I use in my studio.

Speedball ink (small) or if you prefer a larger bottle - Speedball Ink Large Other inks suggestions are Liquitex Acrylic Inks in the color of your choice.

Uncut Matte Board (to make concertina book covers. Note: you can also use cardboard, old books from the thrift shop, and cardboard from the back of a sketchpad. Use your imagination, you don't have to use what I use for your books.

craft knife, or box cutter to cut your book covers

Pens -  Anything you have on hand.

Examples: Gell Pens, Ink Pens, calligraphy pens,  Paint Pens, Ruling Pen.

Pencils - Anything you have on hand.

Examples: Charcoal Pencils, Graphite Pencils, Mechanical Pencils, Colored Pencils.

Brushes - Your favorites

Large Brush - If you want to experiment with painting larger, pick up a brush at your local hardware store.

Air Dry Clay

YES Paste - My favorite for collaging.

Paint: Use what you feel comfortable using. Since this course is not geared toward a specific medium, you can use anything.

Color: When we get to Module 3, we will do a lot of preliminary work on developing your color palettes. Use your favorite colors, and during this lesson, if you find you need new colors, you can add them here. If you need help mixing color, I will do my best to help you find a good mix.

Color Wheel - This is my favorite Color Wheel! I think every artist should have this one in their studio, and I use it all the time.

Artist Tape

Vintage Book or Thrift Shop Book - We will deconstruct a book to create our "Book of Colors."

Inspiration Boards: In Modules 3 & 5, you will create two separate inspiration boards. You can tape it onto a wall or door in your home. Use a pinboard or a piece of foam core. You can also pick up a small piece of MDF from the hardware store and use it as well.

Additional Substrates: Regarding your final pieces, I encourage you to choose the substrates you love working on. You don't have to have anything specific since this is about you and the work you choose to create.

I will often look around my studio and try to use what I have on hand. You can paint over an old canvas, use Wood Panels, or a beautiful piece of watercolor paper. Remember, this course is all about you and the beautiful work you will create!

Optional Elements that you might want to use in your work.

About Me Renee Mueller

Thank you for choosing to take my class, I'm so thrilled and honored that you're here. I want to tell you a little about me. I hold a BFA from the University of Michigan where I studied Art History, Dance, and Choreography. I danced professionally and had the honor of teaching dance at the University of Michigan's Musical Theater and Theater Departments. Most of my life has been spent in the dance studio and the theater. Because of this, I have had the privilege to work with many talented dancers, costume designers, set designers, lighting designers, and musicians. One of the many things that I learned from this experience in the performing arts was to honor your ideas and devote yourself to a subject. Also, to share, support, and collaborate. Once I decided to "exit stage left", it was challenging to find another creative outlet. Like many of us, I loved to draw, paint and create as a child, but never really invested a tremendous amount of time in cultivating that practice. About 10 years ago I began drawing again and decided to commit to a daily practice. I was challenged and inspired!. So, I continue to practice, experiment with materials, and allow my ideas to guide me through the process. When creating art, I draw upon the many methods I learned as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Research, gathering inspiration, honoring my point of view, and sharing ideas. It is my hope that by sharing my creative practices, my process, techniques and what inspires me, you will find something that works for you.
